Project Info
As subconsultants to Clark Construction and Project Design Consultants, Schmidt Design Group is providing landscape architecture design services for improvements to the SDSU Mission Valley site. The design of the 172-acre site transforms the largest expanse of parking lot west of the Mississippi into a unique campus that includes a new stadium, residential, mixed use, research, hospitality, and commercial. Schmidt Design Group is leading the design and detailing for more than 80-acres of open space, including the flagship River Park, recently opened to the public. The design is inspired by the adjacency to the San Diego River and Murphy Canyon Creek. It aims to balance passive and active recreation, providing multiple sports fields, children’s play areas, passive turf, environmental education, and a weaving network of accessible and engaging walkways. Seasonal flood accommodations are an integral part of the design and native planting is the predominant theme.
In addition to the design and detailing of the River Park, Schmidt Design Group collaborated with the team to craft an early vision for the SDSU Mission Valley development to create a cohesive campus experience. This included establishing crucial site design elements such as an alternate road alignment, underpass development, sidewalks widths, development envelopes, the location of the future recreation center, and the configuration and themes for finger open spaces. Our team was also tasked with creating aesthetic cohesion for the site. We provided graphic design and coordination for the majority of the wayfinding signage, kiosks, and monument signs, along with trail signage, artful medallions, engraving, and 11 interpretive panels.
