Project Info
As subconsultant to T.Y. Lin International for the City of Encinitas, Schmidt Design Group, Inc. provided design and planning services for four pedestrian rail undercrossings in the City of Encinitas along the Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) coastal rail corridor. The first completed undercrossing is located off Highway 101 at Santa Fe Drive. The main thrust of the Santa Fe Pedestrian Undercrossing project is to improve pedestrian access and circulation as well as provide rail/pedestrian safety across the San Diego portion of the busy rail corridor. The improvements included the construction of the undercrossing, pedestrian-approach enhancements, landscape beautification, crosswalks, and other street-crossing improvements on adjacent roadways, as well as utility relocations and environmental mitigation. Through a series of interactive design workshops, design themes for each undercrossing were chosen. Design elements include a monument constructed of stacked stone and seaglass, accent stones that invoke the stones and pebbles found at the beach, a retaining wall mimicking the texture of seaside cliffs, a stairway that references the iconic Swamis Beach Access staircase, and more. Drought-tolerant plantings were used throughout the site.
