Project Info
Riverwalk San Diego is a 200-acre master-planned community located in the heart of the Mission Valley. With both the San Diego River and the MTS trolley traversing through the center of the project, this transit-oriented development will replace an existing 27-hole golf course with approximately 4,000 multi-family residential units, mixed-use development centered around a new trolley station, commercial office space, and a new 80-acre regional river park.
Schmidt Design Group is collaborating with Hines and the design team to develop a walkable community that engages and celebrates the San Diego River. This will be accomplished through the integration of sustainable practices that embrace the river’s unique and sensitive ecology. The site plan offers a diverse range of open space scales and typologies. Several neighborhood parks and open space corridors are integrated north of the existing trolley line. These spaces offer picnicking, dog parks, open play, overlooks, children’s play, and more. A linear park connects Friars Road to the San Diego River and the proposed regional park south of the river. Two civic plazas are also planned within the development.
The regional park will be more than 80-acres in size and include a significant number of active amenities as well as opportunities to connect with nature and the San Diego River. Improvements are expected to be implemented in phases. The final park is anticipated to include walking and hiking trails including the San Diego River Trail, multi-purpose fields, playgrounds, dog parks, flexible turf areas, children’s exploratory play, observation decks, water quality improvements, interpretive education, and a recreation center.
