Project Info
The master plan for Pine Avenue Park includes active and passive elements: a community center designed by Manuel Oncina Architects, an informal amphitheater, a lighted multi-purpose field of synthetic turf, basketball courts, batting cages, a children’s play area, picnic areas, and traffic-calming street improvements. Five tall ceramic mosaic tile sculptures, created by artist Kim Emerson, were installed at key focal points in the park. Each of the sculptures represents a different flower important to the commercial flower industry in Carlsbad. Another key visual identifier of the park is the ocean theme, which is carried out by sail-shaped shade structures and wave patterns in the playground resilient surfacing, pavement, and natural turf mounds. Creation of the 7.7-acre Pine Avenue Park started with a “take part” workshop with City staff and the local community, led by Glen Schmidt, FASLA. Groups of participants created designs on a base sheet of the site with templates of park amenities. Schmidt Design Group, Inc. created a final alternative utilizing many of the ideas generated during this lively process. The master plan was later approved without significant opposition.
