Project Info
Schmidt Design Group collaborated with the Port of San Diego to establish a new landscape vision for North Harbor Drive. Nearly 90,000 motorists experience North Harbor Drive on a daily basis making it one of the most visually prominent experiences in San Diego County. The proposed landscape enhancements establish a rhythmic series of landscape districts, each responsive to their context. Additionally, a series of critical street intersections, or gateways, will receive enhanced treatments signifying them as important thresholds. The large triangular island at the intersection of North Harbor Drive and West Laurel Street presents a unique opportunity to create a sustainable and artful statement at a busy and highly visible intersection. Lastly, the medians along North Harbor Drive will serve as the unifying thread connecting the various landscape districts and intersections into a cohesive experience. The planting design will feature both bold textures and massing to be experienced from the busy vehicular thoroughfare as well as more granular planting compositions along the southern pedestrian and bicycle path. All plantings will be native, drought-tolerant, or climate adaptive creating an environment for significant water conservation.
