Project Info
The Health & Wellness Hub at MiraCosta College serves as a model site being the first of a series of improvement projects planned for the scenic Oceanside campus. The design team worked closely with the College to create a vision that would build upon the existing character of the College while promoting sustainability and incorporating the specific needs of each of the programs and users. Located at the terminus of the east to west pedestrian promenade, the hub site is comprised of a new Gymnasium, Allied Health Building, KHAN (Kinesiology, Health & Nutrition) Building, and a parking lot for students, staff and visitors.
The new buildings are strategically located to create a series of communal outdoor spaces that foster collaboration, celebration, and community-building. The project site personifies the concept of wellness by offering a connection to nature through panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and mountains. This connection to nature, both tangible and perceived, is a critical component in the landscape design for MiraCosta’s new Wellness Hub. The landscape composition of the Hub shapes how students, staff, and visitors approach the site, what they experience upon arrival, and guides them on a journey toward wellness and purpose. These spaces are connected by pathways that gracefully weave thought the campus from the existing pedestrian bridge. Courtyards at each of the buildings offer more intimate exterior gathering spaces, serving as an extension of the adjacent building programming. Additional communal spaces are located throughout the campus and scaled to accommodate a range of academic, social, and therapeutic needs for students, faculty and visitors.
