Project Info
Schmidt Design Group initially provided the City of Santee with a series of proposed design alternatives that would transform Mast Park into a more engaging place that fosters a healthy lifestyle. After two public meetings, a preferred alternative was chosen. Some of the main desires of residents at both meetings included keeping the rustic and “naturalized” feel of the park. While keeping the overall aesthetics in place, some of the elements of the new master plan design include additional parking, upgrading a mile-long loop trail around the park with interpretive signs and exercise/fitness stations, relocating restrooms to make them more accessible, and adding passive areas and children’s play areas that include traditional and natural play elements.
The plan calls for keeping the existing basketball courts and adding several gazebos for picnicking and group activities. The plan would also include boardwalk elements connecting the park to the San Diego River, dog park improvements, and more. Although the park encompasses about 100-acres, the updated master plan focused on the 26.5-acres on the north side of the San Diego River. The plan will serve as a comprehensive guide for the development of facilities to meet the needs of the community over the next 20 years.
