Project Info
Maruta Gardner Playground is a site dedicated to its community, representing fun and recreation alongside respect and remembrance. The playground’s namesake is Maruta Gardner, a longtime Mission Bay community leader who was killed tragically by an impaired driver. As Gardner, along with the Mission Beach Woman’s Club, had launched the initial campaign to improve Bonita Cove park, the playground was named in her honor.
The playground includes a half-acre playground, replacement of the comfort station, a new shade structure, enhanced security lighting, and ADA-compliant sidewalk and ramp replacements. The heart of the playground is a large, sprawling rope climbing structure designed as a nod to the neighboring Belmont Park’s iconic Big Dipper roller coaster. A whimsical cotton candy pink-and-blue color scheme captures a sense of joy and wonder within the park, and shade structures designed after ticket booths further expand the amusement park atmosphere. The playground also provides a number of other unique elements of play, including single- and double-seated swings, balance equipment, see-saws, and spinners. The park’s spacious layout has made it a beloved destination for families.
