Project Info
The modernization of King-Chaves Primary Arts and Athletic Academy transform a dated elementary campus into a vibrant outdoor experience where students are encouraged to explore, learn, and play. Located in the culturally diverse community of Stockton in San Diego, CA, the project involved a whole site modernization of the SDUSD charter school as well as improvements to a joint use field through the City of San Diego. The project included removal of the portable classrooms, a new two-story classroom building expansion, expansion of the existing staff parking.
The modernized campus includes ample outdoor space for both recreation and learning. Vibrant colors and a variety of forms invite students to engage with their surroundings in a variety of ways. A large play structure designed to accommodate two age groups encourages interaction and bonding between students of all ages. Educational gardens allow children a hands-on opportunity to interact with nature. Additionally, a youth-sized soccer field and basketball courts provide opportunities for structured and unstructured play. The range of amenities throughout the campus have transformed the schoolyard into a vibrant recreational beacon within the underserved Stockton community.
