Project Info
Schmidt Design Group created the Escondido Creek Trail Master Plan as a resource and guideline for future development of the creek trail, which extends approximately seven miles through central Escondido. The plan will transform a blighted flood-control channel into a recreational asset for the community, taking a second look at how concrete flood control channels in urbanized areas can be transformed into valuable active and passive open space and function as an alternative transit corridor. Community outreach was a core component of the master plan design process. To raise awareness about the master plan project and solicit input from local residents, the City of Escondido and Schmidt Design Group hosted community meetings and conducted an online survey.
Based on the feedback gathered, the master plan goals focus on effectively connecting residents to work, home, recreation, schools, and shopping without the need for an automobile. Program elements identified include day-lighting the creek, interpretive education, public artwork, a unified trail design, adding pedestrian bridges, dynamic lighting, fitness stations, a community garden, access to farmer’s markets, and the promotion of wildlife and water conservation by introducing native plants, trees, and a landscape theme specifically designed with a water-wise focus.
