Project Info
The Chollas Lake Park Playground improvements provided much-needed updates to an underserved community in San Diego. With an average household income nearly 15% lower than the San Diego County average, and more than two-thousand of the neighborhood’s residents living with a disability, the Southeast San Diego Community project required innovative and budget-conscious improvements that focused on accessibility. The improvements included the removal and replacement of existing concrete paving and the addition of accessible tables, an accessible drinking fountain, new playground structures, including sand and resilient surfacing to meet accessible standards, a new shade structure, and new accessible parking.
Unique features include updating an existing boat play feature as well as the design of natural play log climbing structures constructed from on-site eucalyptus trees which gave these trees a new life instead of simply removing them.
