Project Info
The re-visioning of this existing two-acre park near the Children’s Museum and San Diego Convention Center in downtown San Diego is intended to provide a more usable open-space area for the public. The iconic urban park, originally designed by renowned landscape architect Peter Walker, features a large civic pond, an urban forest, and artful whimsical mounding. The Martin Luther King Promenade bifurcates Children’s Park, which has become an important part of the visual identity of San Diego over the years. The park design pays tribute to the original design as well as providing innovative, functional, and economical open space. Proposed improvements include retention of the iconic pond and urban forest while adding creative amenities such as a large children’s play area, an interactive water feature, informal open space, and a restroom/vendor building that will help activate the park.
Schmidt Design Group completed the schematic design and general development plan and Spurlock Landscape Architects completed the construction documents and construction administration for the project.
