Project Info
Schmidt Design Group collaborated with the City of Carlsbad on an extensive exterior renovation of their existing City Hall facilities. The project consisted of hardscape, landscape, and irrigation renovations as well as ADA compliance upgrades and site lighting enhancements. The team worked closely with City staff to thoughtfully integrate a centralized “plaza” space within the City Hall quad which serves as a civic gathering space and accommodates overflow capacity for Commission and Council hearings.
The plaza was designed intentionally to protect the root zones of two mature trees that offer shade and scale within the space. Cast-in-place seat walls with warm timber caps invite visitors to site under the shade of the preserved trees. A dated overhead canopy linking the various City Hall structures was demolished to create an open and airy experience. Thoughtfully selected and tolerant planting was used throughout the renovation to offer year-round color and textural interest.
