Making Places Possible: The Impact of Internships

I first started studying Landscape Architecture through my time spent studying Horticulture and working at nurseries, which showed me the importance of our connection to the natural environment. I quickly realized the impact Landscape Architects can play in improving this connection; as well as combating issues like climate change, pollution, and other challenges that press societies across the globe. It’s not just about getting people to go outside- it’s about bringing society together through the creation of spaces where positive change can happen.

My experience as an intern at Schmidt Design Group has been a huge step in teaching me what it takes to push these goals forward into reality. Having a vision that responds to its community and context is essential to creating meaningful spaces, and it was exciting to learn how Schmidt Design Group works with the people they are designing for. Being able to participate in different stages of the design process, from sketching ideas on trace, going to meetings, developing construction documents, and much more, has exposed me to the deep involvement a project takes from conception to completion.

As a student that has much more to learn moving forward in my career, this experience has made me comfortable with not knowing, not having all the answers, and not being afraid to ask. Being able to effectively communicate the concepts, both visually and verbally, that make these places possible is so much more than having a great idea. Technical skills (that I still need to improve on) allow us to translate intangible objectives and digital drawings into occupiable spaces that have longevity and relevance long after those who created them are gone. Responding to the context of a place, recognizing the character of a community, knowing how to shape space to serve those who will use it are all aspects of this profession that I now more deeply understand.

I feel extremely fortunate to have worked with and learned from the diverse, creative, and skilled Schmidt Design Group team. It has been a great way to spend the summer, and being able to participate in shaping public space in the communities that I spent a majority of my life in makes it that much more fulfilling.

-Olivia Miethke, 2019.

Olivia Miethke is a 2nd year Landscape Architecture student at Cal Poly Pomona going into her 3rd year this fall. She joined Schmidt Design Group as an intern in May of 2019. Her interest in landscape architecture began with studies of horticulture and employment at a nursery which sparked her interest in the human/nature connection. When not studying or delving into the world of landscape architecture, she enjoys sketching, cooking, and enjoying the outdoors. She plans to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture in Spring of 2021.
